It is a nucleoside (purine) antibiotic produced by the strain of Str. rimosus BA-90912 (ATCC 14673). 0.02-0.05 μg/mL of Sangivamycin inhibits HeLa cells. It has weak inhibitory effect on sarcoma-180 and adenocarcinoma 755 in mice. It has obvious inhibitory effect on leukemia L-1210. When intraperitoneally administered, the drug binds to nucleic acids in tissues in mice through phosphorylation.
